How BugGuard™ Works
The active ingredient in the BugGuard™ formulation bonds molecularly with the cotton fabric in SafeStep socks to form a protective coating upon treatment.
Bacteria and germs make contact with BugGuard’s positive charge coating, which causes the cell to die quickly after contact.
This is due to the socks surface being a positively charged polymer that attracts then electrocutes and ruptures the microbe’s negatively charged cell membrane.
This action by BugGuard™ inhibits the growth of microbes on SafeStep socks by utilising a charge disruption mode of action.
BugGuard™ is a cationic antimicrobial agent that attaches to the microbe's cell wall and disrupts the cell wall's natural protection by interacting with cellular proteins needed to maintain cell wall integrity.
It is this charge-disruption mode of action that is central to the breakdown of the microbial cell, also commonly known as lysis.
The BugGuard™ formulation is a fabric enhancement treatment that gives the SafeStep sock surface active antibacterial action.
The resulting micro polymer coating delivers the germ-killing action which mechanically destroys bacteria.

SafeStep socks treated with BugGuard™ have been independently tested by Bureau Veritas to determine their antimicrobial properties.
Created in 1828, Bureau Veritas is a global leader in Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC).
They are the preferred certification body based on their high testing standards and global presence as an international agency.
Bureau Veritas assessed the antibacterial properties BugGuard™ treated socks using the AATCC Test Method 100 Assessment of Antibacterial finishes on Textile Materials.
The results of the assessment showed that the BugGuard formulation was responsible for killing up to 99.9% of bacteria and germs tested, as seen in the extract report below.
